Lo hemos comentado muchas veces: el gran secreto de aprender inglés es… practice, practice, practice! Con la suficiente práctica, hasta los aspectos más tricky de la gramática te saldrán de manera natural. Por eso, hoy vamos a dar un rápido repaso y a practicar con estos ejercicios de verbos modales en inglés.

Uso de los Verbos Modales

Modal verbs: Repaso a las reglas básicas

Los verbos modales son una especie de «verbos auxiliares» que acompañan al infinitivo para expresar diferentes condiciones (habilidad, posibilidad, necesidad…). Son necesarios porque en inglés no existe un tiempo verbal del condicional.

Para usarlos de manera correcta, hay una serie de normas básicas:

• Siempre deben usarse con otro verbo, nunca solos.
• Este verbo va después del modal y está en forma de infinitivo sin to.
• Los verbos modales no se conjugan ni tienen tiempo.

Fácil, ¿verdad? Vamos a ver un resumen de los usos de cada verbo modal:

Modales Simples

Habilidad

1. Can (presente): I can speak Japanese (Yo se hablar japonés)

2. Could (pasado): I could swim when I was 3 years old (Sabía nadar cuando tenía tres años)

3. Be able to (futuro): Once you finish this course, you will be able to speak Japanese (Una vez que acabes el curso, sabrás/podrás hablar japones)

Obligación

1. Must (obligación interna): I must obey my parents (Debo obedecer a mis padres)
2. Have to (Obligación externa): You have to wear a seatbelt when you drive (Tienes que ponerte un cinturon cuando coduzcas.

Permiso

1. Can: Can I borrow your pen? (¿Me puedes prestar tu boli?)

2. Could: Could I ask you a question? (¿Puedo hacerle una pregunta?)

3. May (educado / formal): Teacher, may I go to the toilet, please? (Profe, ¿ouedo ir al servicio por favor?)

Prohibición

1. Can't: You can't wear sandals when you drive (No puedes / No se puedes llevar sandalias cuando conduces).

2. Mustn't: You mustn't smoke here. It's banned! (No debes fumar aquí)

Posibilidad

1. Can: It can rain today (Puede llover hoy)

2. Could: It could be dangerous (Podría ser peligroso)

3. Be able to: I will be able to get in time (Podré llegar a tiempo)

4. May: He may be late (El puede llegar tarde)

5. Might: It might rain in June (Podría llover en junio)

Consejo

1. Should: You should eat healthier food (Deberías comer más sano)

2. Ought to: You ought to sleep more hours (Deberías dormir más horas)

Deducción

1. Must: He must be the new teacher (El debe ser el nuevo profesor)

Necesidad

1. Need to: I don't have cash. I have to go to the bank (No tengo dinero en efectivo. Tengo que ir al banco)

Ausencia de Necesidad

1. Don't have to: You don't have yo drive because we are travelling by bus (No tienes que conducir porque vamos a ir en autobús).

Modales Perfectos

Crítica - Arrepentimiento

1. Should have: I should have studied harder during the year. (Debería haber estudiado más durante el año).

Habilidad de haber hecho algo, pero no se hizo

2. Could have: Mary could have passed the exam. But, she didn't study anything.(Mary podría haber aprobado el examen. Pero, ella no estudio nada).

Certeza de que algo no es posible

1. Could have: Alice couldn't have passed her exams because she never studied at her school. (Alice no podía haber aprobado sus exámenes porque nunca estudió en su colegio).

Posibilidad de que algo fuera cierto 

1. May / Might have: George may/might have already arrive to Madrid. He left 5 hours ago (George podría haber llegado a Madrid. El salió hace 5 horas).

Certeza sobre el pasado

1. Must have: Their exam must have been hard. All students were disappointed after it (Sus exámen debe haber sido duro. Todos los estudiantes estaban desilusionados después de hacerlo).

Deseo de haber hecho algo, pero que no se hizo

1. Would have: Tom would have gone to China, but it was really expensive. (Tom habría ido a China, pero era muy caro).
